Hello,
I have a brand new 6 gallon Eclipse tank. I set up the tank on Monday (rocks, ornaments, live plants) and put in some freshwater Biozyme. I heated the tank to 73 Degrees. I added the fish (1 male Beta and one snail) on Tuesday evening. Every day I have been putting in some biozyme to build up the beneficial bacteria. The fisha nd snail are doing great. I was notified today that the power in my neighborhood will be off tomorrow from 9am to 4pm. The outside temperature tomorrow will probably be around 31degrees F. My house cools off rather quickly because of it's many windows. I am concerned about the water in my tank cooling down to much. What can I do to prevent this? Also, I have to leave the house tomorrow at 8am (1 hour before the power will be off) and will not be back home until 1pm. Any advice would be helpful. If the water does cool down, how do I reheat the tank with the fish in it? I am very concerned about this whole situation.

well, as far as the heater goes in the tank, there really are no battery operated aquaruim heaters. As far as air goes, Bettas can breathe above the water, so you don't have to worry about that.

If it's only for a day or so, he might be okay, Bettas are pretty hearty. Try draping some blankets over the tank to sort of insulate it, and since it will be dark, he will rest more and be less stressed. I might even try turning the heat up in the house - like WAY up, tonight, then it would take at least a little longer for the house temperature to go down.

Other than my simple guesses, I don't know how to help you, but I have looked up a couple websites for you, I hope they help!

Cover the tank with blankets to hold in as much heat as possible, and see if you can get a battery powered bubbler to keep oxygen going into the water. If a pet store does not have one, try a sporting goods store. I have a battery powered bubbler meant for keeping bait minnows alive in a bucket, I have it just in case power goes out. They usually cost about 5 dollars.

True, bettas will gulp air from the surface, but with blankets over the tank air will run out.

Don't worry, my heater blew for my small betta tank a couple of days ago, right now, what i am doing is covering his tank with blankets, don't worry about air being put in the tank, the betta will gulp air from the surface anyways.

Wrap the tank in some heavy blankets to insulate it. Then check the temp when you get home and add warm water as needed to keep the temperature stable.

I would wrap some towels around it or maybe even tape some syrfofoam on the sides and top. The power won't be out for too long it seems...so you should be ok.
