It is a common practice for Filipinos to change their nicknames as they are getting older. As a child I was called TETA by my elders and grand parents, my parents reffered to be me as my middle name TERESA but as I progress to school age- I was called TESS and when when I was in high school friends started calling me MARITESS which I thought was cool name.
However when I moved to Australia and then to USA I was reffered to as my first name which is MARIA. I love all my names that were given to me both first, middle, and nick names.

Filipino nicknames start off in the youth as terms of endearment. However, a person's nick may vary from one group of friends or family to another. Even among professionals, nicknames are used to determine the degree of association between persons.

Yes. Filipinos, in fact go by several nicknames. There are nicknames for the office, nicknames for the intimate circle, nicknames for very close family. We even call our top government officials by their nicknames.

Sometimes, especially if your 1st nicknames sounds so childish and as you grow older, it starts to embarass you when your parents call you that so you change to a more 'mature' nickname. But some people keep their nickname coz they are used to it or it serves as some sort of childhood memory thing. I'm definetely keeping mine until I grow old.
