I saw a recent "class" photo of the current U.S. Supreme Court Justices. Why doesn't John Roberts have the gold stripes on the sleeves of his robe as former Chief Justice Rehnquist did?

I think CJ Rehnquist was fond of the stripes (why, I am not sure), so he started wearing them when he became Chief Justice. I am not sure if any other previous Chief Justices wore the stripes - I can't recall that any in recent times have.

the gold stripes were rehnquist's design he wanted them...it is not required...and most likely no other chief will do it...it was a rehnquist thing.
