It is really hard to say..I got SO excited because at 36 weeks I was already starting to dilate and they told me I would have a Christmas baby....Christmas came and went as did my due date and I'm still the same small amt dilated (only a cm).....the dr. said with first babies the usual thing to happen is that you will completely efface (soften and thin out) and then you will dilate. Some people go from nothing to the full ten cm in a matter of hours, other people need the medication to start things up. I hope you will go on your own, but you just have to wait and see because every woman's body is so different!

Babies come when they want too!! But having a soft cervix and loosing your plug is a very good start!! You can stay that way for a while. Just try to relax and enjoy the last FULL nights sleeps you will miss those very soon!!

with both of my children I was softened down there but I wouldnt dialate. Both were late and I had to be induced. Only then did I start to dialate because of the little medication i was given so if your not to term depending on your doctor you might just a while to wait.

How far along are you? If you are like 35 weeks then I wouldn't rush things too much, the baby is only about 5.5lbs. If you are anywhere after 37 weeks it can be any day. I've known women to sit at 3cm dialiated for weeks before delivery.
