I am on my second Dell XPS M1210. I went all out and bought the XPS because my inspiron could not handle my work. I used Dell recommendations to get a really good configuration. Problem is that my system runs short of memory too often. If I open 3 programs and start working, at some point, everything freezes. I have to close 1 of them in order to continue working and sometimes I actually have to restart. I have gone and increased my memory from the control panel but that doesn't seem to do any good. Are there any suggestions?

Thanks. The laptop is new so I doubt it is a virus. My virus software has been running. I think it is all the junk in my start up. I have unchecked the over 30 items. I don't know what they mean but I'll find out when I restart. Thanks for the answers. I'll let you know if it works.

Check to see how much "junk" you have running in the background that is using memory without your knowledge. Almost every program you install does this.

Click on Start and select Run
Type in: msconfig
Click on the Start up tab of the windows that appears
You will see all the programs loading themselves in the background every time you start Windows.
Uncheck any you do not need (which is normally all of the program - the programs will still run, they just take an extra second or two to start when you choose to run them rather then letting them choose to run themselves)
If you have problems with any, you can go back and recheck them.
See if that makes a difference.

the XPS is a great laptop
with Core 2 Duo, it shouldn't freeze at all
you might have a virus on there.
i have a computer with a dual core (similar to the one you have)
and i can run about 5 to 8 different programs
then again i have 2gbs of RAM
i am guessing you have 512mb.
but that is not the problem.
i am pretty sure spyware and viruses are
get Ad-aware Se plus
or even the free edition
both work about the same.

It could be a shortage of RAM (can be easily and cheaply upgraded) or their may be a corrupted registry file in your windows installation. You may want to do a "repair" using original windows disc (you should do this yearly, everyone)

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
