i am very sorry to say this, but you can't get a real nice horse without lots of money. but, never say never, you can, but there is usually a LOT of work and baggage that comes with them. they are often abused, neglected, or being sold because they are badly behaved. trust me, i know. i bought a nice horse for a couple thousand (cheap), and a year later of hard work, we're about half way through all his problems. he's green, gelded late, quirkey, and abounding in helath problems due to being neglected. but, under all that, he really is a nice horse with great pedigree and a good temprament.

you have to decide wether you want to save up and wait and get a nicely trained horse that's well bred. or you can take the plunge and the energy and time that comes with it to look for a diamond in the rough. but to do the second, you either have to already know a lot, or be a willing pupil. i didn't know ANYTHING when i bought my horse, and it was a nightmare! but now, all's fine and i've learned a lot on the way - but i wouldn't advise everyone do what i did.

good sites to buy horses are www.horsetopia.com, www.equine.com, and www.dreamhorse.com. there are more out there, but those three are the ones i've found most helpful.

good luck!

To find a nice horse for a low price you're going to need to find an experienced horse person to make sure the horse you're buying is okay, and not lame and/or crazy. The cheapest place to get a horse is at auction. This is the most risky, and you'll need to bring along someone who is very experienced with horses. Next up if youi're looking for a little more layed back horse maybe find a dealer that deals with ranches, you can get some nice layed back horses for very cheap from here. From there is the basic horse dealer who will deal in all types of horses, and from there is simply searching for a good deal in the paper and on the internet. The most expensive place to buy a horse is from a nice show barn with a big trainer. Being at a nice facility can bring up a horse's price by thousands. Good luck!

Someone else gave you some great sites in their response to you that I was going to mention; another person mentioned rescuing a horse destined for the slaughter house. I actually found my mare on one of the websites I referred to above. AND she was a rescue. There are many adoption agencies that specifically rescue PMU mares and their foals (PMU stands for Pregnant Mare Urine - the mares are impregnated, their urine is collected for the hormones which are then used in the manufacture of hormone replacement therapies - just so we spoiled middle aged females don't have to live with the horrors of hot flashes - makes me glad I opted to suffer through mine; many of these mares and their foals end up at auctions, the next stop probably the slaughterhouse). There is a Standardbred Rescue organization in New Jersey that adopts out retired Standardbred racehorses - they've got an adoption application that could, pardon the pun, choke a horse, but their adoption fees are more than reasonable. I was in the process of completing their adoption application when I found my horse.

I understand you want a horse. Is there by any chance you could go to a Slaughter House and rescue the horses there? They are great pets. Instead of being so selfish.........maybe you should try one.
