My sister had this problem since she was 10 yo. eventually she outgrew it. are you able to unlock it yourself or go to the er?? see a good sports med dr to see if there is a exercise regiment that would strengthen the muscles in your knee and help prevent the locking. good luck.

an MRI may not reveal soft tissue issues like cartilage degradation. I know that my knee locks up sometimes after I had rheumatic fever.
It could be from a lack of synovial fluids.
You could also have ligament problems where they are lacking enough sulfates (chondrotian or dermatan) and they are not as flexible as you need.
If you are really worried I'd suggest speaking with an orthopedic specialist however if it only happens occasionally then I wouldn't worry too much right now...you can try taking chondrotian sulfate pills to boost the level in your cartilage but I'm not sure how well that would work.
hope that helps a little

I would check with a Chiropractor. Maybe all you need is an alignment of your knee. With a normal MRI, I would try chiropractic.
