sorry for the mis-spelling of British, she is in fact the Queen of the British Commonwealth, & what i meant by what she represents is the divine right to a life with privileges. 50 years ago she was the richest person in England yet she only recently began to pay tax.......why?

The queen is supported by the majority of britons. The royal family cost about 69p per person who pays tax and gives more than a speech once a year. She is in fact a socialist when it comes to health, education and public services and is not really a lay about. She works 46 weeks a year, and for an 80 year old that is highly impressive. She does not just represent high society but also britain, the commonwealth, anglican community and a hell of a load of charities.

My grandfather fought in Italy during WWII and served in the army and intelligence services for years after. He would say that he does not serve any politician, he served the Queen and her family. She makes the majority of us proud.

British (note the spelling) people have mixed views on the Queen. Personally, I am happy with the Royal Family, and the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth (and also England, (talking to Helen from above!), and Scotland (note the union of the crowns 300 years ago)).

Actually our Queen is highly regarded in this country. There are a number of younger generation who seem to think it big to insult and put her down. They are all ignorant of what she does mean to this country, and haven't got a clue about the work she does. Throughout her reign she has never let this country down once. Some will go on about her leeching money from this country and sitting on her backside raking it in. That really is not the case however. She does work very hard, but in her modesty she does not go around bragging about it. The tourists that flock to see the Queen, the Palace, the changing of the guard. and the Crown Jewels generate millions of pounds towards the economy of this country. She is highly regarded in this country and only disregarded by a small minority that really do not have a clue, or are envious of her wealth and standing in this country.
God save our Queen.
Just want to add that you will notice some of the answers on this topic are in breach of the Yahoo guidelines regarding the use of foul language. They are typical answers from the anti royal minority who cannot even express themselves properly. Their comments do not reflect the feelings of the majority. In fact they only show how misguided and crude these people are.

I am an American and I greatly admire the queen. Yes there seems to be a waste with the pomp and circumstance, however, what country leaders do not waste? She is to be admired for her work during WWII, taking the throne at a young age when the country was at war. She has endured embarrassment, heartache, scandal, yet holds her head high. Read a few books about her, and how normal/human she really is, just a down to earth woman behind doors, and the true meaning of royalty in public.

The Queen is to be admired. Like her namesake, she has been a true monarch. She is a symbol of tradition and takes those traditions seriously. A monarchy carries on ceremony for centuries, and British are proud of their tradition. The queen is in the true sense of the word "Queen" She is regal and should be respected not only as a monarch but as a person, she is a mother, devoted to her family and the British should be proud.

I'm British. I'm half English and half Welsh, so I really am British in that sense.

I don't mind the queen - it's the rest of her embarrassing brood that I object to. Her buffoon of a husband who really ought to keep his mouth shut for fear of offending all and sundry. Her tree-hugging son and heir. Her ludicrous two other sons - Andrew who really just seems to want to be an international playboy and waste of space. And Edward? He couldn't even keep to a pan-media promise to keep out of his nephew's life while at university.

As I said, I have nothing against the queen. But I do think that Cromwell had the right idea.

I think once QE2 resigns it is time we grew up as a country.

What does it say to the most brilliant and able people in the country that no matter how hard they work, how much they strive to excel and improve the country, that they will never reach the top level purely because they weren't placed there by accident of birth?

Why do we have to be 'subjects'? Why do we have to bow and scrape to these people? What makes them better than the rest of us? It makes me laugh to see the most highly educated and brilliant people tugging their forelocks to people who don't have two O'levels to rub together.

It is the doctors, surgeons, academics, inventors, charity workers etc that deserve our respect. NOT people who have led a privileged life, pampered with their every whim answered.

As for tradition - well, they used to burn wives on their husbands' funeral pyres in India - just because it's tradition doesn't make it right.

As Oscar Wilde once said, " A man kills the things he loves".

Indeed, God Save The Queen of England!

Everybody likes the anglican figure but everyone hates the parade of cliches and scandal so many times the press had a party with. A true british does like his activities, and such include accepting the will of former kings and the presence of some who perhaps are not fit for ruling but are very good at assemblying crown permanency.

I like the Queen and what she represents. She has been one of the best monarchs this country has ever had. What ever she costs the country, she is more than worth it. ( She costs far less than we pay to lazy people who won`t work) She works dammed hard for us, she has got a really boring job. Do you think she actually likes even a fraction, of the things that she has to attend? None-the-less she turns up to them all, always looking immaculate and smiling and waving. I feel really sorry for her sometimes. Do you smile and wave and look interested when you go somewhere that you don`t particularly want to?
