I feel so rude asking this question, but it was something that was brought up amongst a group of people sitting near me in a restaurant today and I was curious to hear some other opinions. I also notice that many of the asians I know (not all), try so hard to impress me by telling me how much money they have or feel special if they are acquainted with rich people. I grew up in a wealthy family but we were always humble and never felt the need to brag about. Is it a low self-esteem issue within Asian culture. I hate to generalize but that's the culture I see the whole materialistic problem in the most

Not all of them are materialistic...Lots of them are, but you can find it in Europe, Australia and America too.
People who comes from poor country tend to chase dollar more too, i think its becaues of their financial problem...

i never realized probably because i dont know any asians but i guess when you really work hard for something and have a lot of money sometimes people not just asians can become carried away and get arrogant. who knows you could just be looking at it in a different way, to some it's just a way of saying how happy they are with their accomplishments, some don't think of it as bragging. but hey i'm quite sure once in your lifetime you got a little arrogant but just didn't realize it. well, what can i say money can do that to you, sometimes.

Generally, they are not materialistic.

If you happen in Asia, when you lose your way, you can easily approach any people in the street to guide you. They are more than happy to help you without expecting compensation.

On isolated cases. there are group of people who are proud of their wealthy families. This is due to the big gap between the have and the poor in Asian.

If you visit Jakarta, you can see the above.

Hope this helps.

Generally, no. I am Asian and i made up a religion called anti-materialism. I dislike parties and gifts and stuff like that. None of the Asians i know brag about their prosperity either.
