If my friend buys her boss something for his computer and, through no fault of hers, it is defective and breaks his computer, loses all his data, and possibly sets him and his house and his girlfriend on fire, will she be fired from her job?

There's no "right" answer here. It depends on the boss. If he is a reasonable person, then no, your friend would not be fired. After all, he has the ultimate choice of using this gift or not. However, having said that, not everyone is reasonable and fair.

A piece of computer hardware or software started a house on fire? There definitely should be an investigation of some sort.

How in the world would we/could we know what's going to happen to your friend. We don't know the boss. Is he a jerk? A kind man? An over-reactor? I have no idea. Heck, YOU don't even know, or you wouldn't have asked this question.

It is possible that she will go to prison for killing those people, but if it works her boss will give her a big promotion and no one will get hurt.
