I'm betting that one chick came first and caused the ego to swell up. It probably swelled up so much it pushed the chick away
The ego probably then grew old, alone, and bitter and still was swelled way up,so there was not any more chicks around after that.
Nobody likes the stench of a rotten ego.

Ego clearly. Without you, there is no them. You need to have a you, to contrast "them" to. With you as an observative force, you'll never be able to experience chicks in contrast to yourself without yourself. Thus my answer is clear.
