The US needs to do a lot of work before they'll ever be a force in world.... soccer. Heck, we can't even call it by its rightful name: football. Why do we call it soccer, when it originated overseas before this country was founded? Why did we take Rugby, throw in some padding and change some rules around and call it football?

OK, back to the topic. I think the bigger issue is that our soccer does not have nearly the backing and support that our football, baseball, and basketball do. It needs to be more mainstream. Unfortunately, it takes money to play with the big guns. We need our players (all of them) training in Europe/UK. Playing in Europe would be nice, but why would they want American players when they already have a lot of the world's best players in European/UK clubs?

Take a poll of average people you don't know. Figure out what percentage of them know what the FIFA World Cup is. That is an enormous event, so we'll start there. Then compare that to the percentage of the same people who know what the Super Bowl is. (I can't tell you how many people thought I was going home to watch tennis or boating this summer) As far as soccer goes, we are new. The rest of the world has been playing this game seriously far longer than we have.

To be a force in this sport we will either need to lay down top dollar to secure some European or Brazilian players, or hire some European managers and trainers. I don't foresee world class players coming to the US though. Maybe we just need to give it time.

Beasley and Howard have been around a long time, they are no youngsters. And Beasley is not a regular for his team, and Howard is not that good. So I wouldn't go pinning all hopes on them. They are both decent players, but not exceptional.

As for Adu, I feel sorry for him...he's been so over-hyped that anything he does is a disappointment. He is fair, but he will never reach the heights that are expected of him.

no cause other teams will be alot better then the us like brazil, Italy, Mexico, And Argentina. the united states is trying way to hard to make a name for themselves in profesional soccer. First beasly should of stayd in psv indohoven and not go to a losing team like Manchester City. and freddy adu should of played in europe when he had the chance. and howard sucks as a golie all american soccer players suck thats what im saying. mexico will be better and So will Argentina.

Viva Argentina, And Mexico

Not only do you need aspiring young player like you above mentioned, but USA needs to find a competent coach after Arenas.

Also, team work and chemistry plays a lot into a team, and it is crucial to forget rivalries and differences between the players in leagues (MLS) and they must have an excellent work ethic and the will to win.

USA has a pretty bright future in my opinion, but we need the country's support behind us, more soccer fans

I think if the USA wants to become a big force in soccer, they are going to have to have at least 2 or 3 players on their national team to be big stars on any of the major European or South American club leagues. They need "world class" players and I don't think that they have them. Not to say the players that they do have aren't good, I just don't think that they are "world class" or "superstars". I don't see any of them getting offered millions of euros to play on Real Madrid, Man U or AC Milan. You have to have at least your core players playing at the highest level the game has to offer. Although I respect the fact that they created their own league and in a short period of time have made it pretty good but I don't think that it is very comparable to the European or South American leagues.

Maybe they might become a force, but not much of a great one--at least not yet. They have good players, great players i'd say cuz they actually made it to the World Cup! And I repeat: People who like saying jack smack trash about how much some players may suck, just keep your traps shut and don't get those fingers moving to reach S-U-C-K cuz none of yall trash talkers are anywhere close to them! Ehm... excuse me for the comment LAyYerZz, I just have to prove my point at times.

As long as we keep pinning our hopes on "Lando", this squad will not succeed. We need more players playing in the best leagues. They aren't going to get world class playing in MLS. I'm glad to see Dempsey on the move to the Premiership and, maybe, Onyewu along with him.

Another area of concern to me is coaching. Arenas took the team as far as it could go and with a couple of bigger name coaches (besides Klinsmann) being bandied about, we bring in a retread coach on an "interim" basis. It's a shame, really.

Not until they will have strong premier league (equivalent) that attracts international footballers. The international collection of players will contribute towards the technical and tactical development of football.
