It is also the city of firsts. Many of the American institutions & events happened in Boston. Boston Common is the center in the city. It is the nation's oldest partk. It is here where the first public school appeared. The first university is Harvard.
In 1653, it is here that the first library. In 1825, it opened the first high school for girls & the first kindergarten in 1860. It is also the first in subway in 1897. The first Boston Marathon also happened here.

Hmm, it is interesting that prior Answerers told you 11 to 1 that it is "Beantown" versus "the Hub." Actually both are correct, but in fact references in the local media are probably close to the reverse: I'd estimate that the nickname "the Hub" or just "Hub" is used 85-90% of the time, "Beantown" only 10-15%.

Around here most folks call it "Baahstin" or "Bawstin" dependng on whether you come from an Irish neighborhood or an Italian one.
But the tourists call it Beantown.... only news anchors call it "the Hub"
