All I plan to use wirelessly at this point is a laptop (which I haven't purchased yet), my TiVo, and possibly gaming in the future. Does it matter which router I choose? Both are branded by Linksys. Thanks!

A and B are the older standards... G and N are the newer faster standards.

G is fast enough for surfing and downloading videos.

Basically the biggest difference is speed. G would be the fastest. They also have an N-draft router. Technically N is the fastest but it is under going a lot of development. It is not expected to be finalized until 2008 but it is being sold in the stores.

I have had linksys, netgear and a couple others. If you have not bought a router yet. You might consider the N router even though it is still being developed. The N routers allow A, B, G and N devices to work independently. This means they will all work at there supposed maximum. Some of the G routers talk about fast speeds (i.e. 108M) but that is only will the same vendors network cards.

Your future gaming may not be compatible with the 108M speeds which would mean the whole wireless network would have to slow down to 50M to be compatible. I learned this the hard way.

If you do buy a N-draft router. Be sure to not get the proprietary brands (i.e. belken, etc.) Linksys and Netgear should be fine.

Also keep in mind many of the laptops have built in wireless cards. These may not be compatible with anything but the standard G (50M). Although they can be disabled and a new card be installed.

The A/B/G is like a backwards compatible videogame system; it'll work with the older A & B devices as well as the newer G devices. The Wireless-G only connects with other G devices.

When buying a laptop or USB network adapter you want to go with G as it's the fastest.

Most of the newer things today use G, but there are still some that use B out there so the safest bet is to go with the A/B/G.

All i can say is Verizon gave us a on the spot router with our DSL service and it does not artwork good. I went to perfect purchase and offered yet another router that did not artwork good so I took that lower back and offered yet another Verizon router at perfect purchase for $80 and it extremely works great with my Wii, PSP, and DS. it truly is a G yet i do not understand the massive difference between G and N.

the different letters represent different speeds. a was the first, then b then g there is an n out now. the one that has all the letters would be best if they are the same price. If you take you laptop out then the connection speed will be determined by the provider--motel, cafe etc. so if you have the capability to connect to any of them you have a better chance to get connected.
