Do you see white spots on its scales?
Are they eating?
Are they on top of the water sucking in air?

The first thing to watch is poop. If the poop is the colour and buoyancy of the food, this is good poop. Otherwise, there is a problem. Second thing to watch for is behaviour, is the fish flashing (scratching), darting, jumping, gasping or acting out of the ordinary? Next can you see any parasites on the fish? Ich looks like salt, everything else will draw your attention immediately, like a white worm attached at the base of a fin... Thirdly, does the fist look swollen, to skinny, are the fins and tail in tact and is the colour normal?

Those are the major signs of illness and the things to point out when asking someone what the illness is.

Are they less active? Are they floating toward the top or bottom more than in the middle of the tank alot? Do they have little round parasite looking spots attached all over their bodies? Are their fins deteriorating? They are probably sick if you are observing one or more of these...

Ways to know your fish are sick:

- Discoloring
- Inactive
- not eating
- sitting at the bottom ,or top of tank
- breathing heavily
- abnormal spots or exterial growths
