One word would be stairs. However, it is a particular type of stairs in that it leads down to the river. The top of the stairs may be the site for a cremation and then it is called a burning ghat. It is common in India for people to go down to the river to bath so the stairs would lead down to the river. The river is also a part of the final rites of the deceased.
