Discovery is the process of collecting all of the facts of a case. Obviously, this could potentially go on forever. The discovery end date is the date by which all such collection of facts must end, and the case moves on the next step.

In law, discovery is the pre-trial phase in a lawsuit in which each party through the law of civil procedure can request documents and other evidence from other parties or can compel the production of evidence by using a subpoena or through other discovery devices, such as requests for production and depositions.

the end date is just that the last date that new eveidence can be admitted without judicial consent.

New evidence cannot be admitted after a trial date with out the defence/ prosecution being able to examine the evidence fully and compeltely.
