Because some people don't have a choice but to work 48 weeks per year at 60 hours per week for the minimum wage, they are probably the ones who get little or no holiday pay either when it does come to those measly 4 weeks holidays, unless you have worked for a company for 2 years these days you have very little in the way of support and holiday pay, they treat their workers like a number not a person, work them into the ground and sack them for the most pathetic reasons, bring back the unions I say at least they got us what we wanted when I worked plus more holiday than some of them get today, workers more like slaves.

If you have an alternative, millions would like to know!
My last job, I held for 35 years. I was on salary, but it was close to minimum wage with no raises for the last 6 years. I asked many times for the owner to find someone to replace me, but he never interviewed anyone (by the way, when I finally left he said he thought I was joking when I was asking before). My last year there, I worked the entire year with no time off (the owner had a stroke, and I had to bide my time until he was healthy enough to take over my tasks). No paid vacation time, as you say 60+ hours a week, health care the last 3 years, and off and on before that. I wasn't happy there, but felt an obligation to stay until they could find someone. The last year took it's toll, and I couldn't stand it anymore.
The job I am now in pays less, no benefits, they get upset if you even go 15 minutes into overtime, but from time to time I have been forced into it as others didn't show up for their shifts, and then I get penalized for being the one going into overtime. The only nice thing is the 40 hour weeks.
I'm still looking for a better paying job, but by your question, if you have an option that I don't have to work so much and still get by, let me know.
I just have a little aversion to be without heat, lights, telephone, cable TV, car, food, etc. Since being on this new job (been 10 months now) I have had to scale back a lot, even been without electricity for a couple of weeks (fortunately, during the summer), but still looking for a better opportunity.

First, to support my family;second,to pay the bills; third, I've got nothing else to do; fourth, all my friends are working;fifth, I have no choice..I live alone away from my family and the only way for me to keep myself busy is to work. I'd rather go to work than stay at home and cry my eyes out and feel miserable. If I can do more than 60 hours a week, I would. And that 4 weeks (I'm lucky coz my employer give me 6 weeks holiday) paid holiday is the only time of the year that I spend with my kids and family and that's the reason I'm doing those hours.
If you happen to know a job that pays 30 grand a year and I can live with my kids and family and can enjoy the sun and lovely food, please let us know!Because I'm sick and tired of what I'm doing now..

Because they need to make money in order to live and for some, just make enough to survive. People are trapped in many jobs by life circumstances. Not everyone has the opportunity, or perhaps the desire or aptitude to obtain a college degree, for instance.
People are too caught up in trying to live their lives and deal with the stresses of having more month than money, the daily commute, the responsibilities to family in addition to doing their jobs. They don't have time to contemplate change and quite frankly they can't cope with having anything else added to their plate.
When examining the workforce you will note that we are all just ants supporting the function of the ant farm.

First: Most people who work 60 hours per week are making more than minimum wage.
Second: Maybe it is because they feel validated by the work they perform. Maybe they like the overtime...what the hell? Do you have a job? Do you have a decent one? Don't bother answering unless you make over 80,000 a year...IN WHICH CASE YOU PROBABLY WORK 60 OR MORE HOURS A WEEK!

You could always live off the land! Make a little shack in the forest and wear whicker shoes. People are not content with working all the time but that's what we have to do, roll on 65!

money.
what are you doing?
are you studying?
well i worked and studied both. now back to school. and the best is to work. to have many freetime. you have the power uppon your life to choose what to do next. it is a great. i think it worths. and that 4 weeks or more holidays... you will finaly relax. and think that none before in your life was better doing nothing. its like a present....
school is ok too. but without money you cant really do what YOU WANT. anyway you have to work for it. if you are studying to get As for , schoolarships($), for proove you parents ... it is all hard work!!!
btw. you are working since you was born, just shape it... why did you learn to speak... work doesnt means all time to give some service to get paid. it also means that do smthing for an aim.

there are some people who really are workaholic, they can only think about work, even when they're on holiday.
these kind of people are the people that wouldnt be so happy whenever they have to leave their work, and they think other activities such as hanging out with your friends, travelling, are so much more boring than working..
but some of them just have to work, not by choice..
it's not that they want to work all the time, or want to be behind the cubicle for the rest of their lives..
they must have goals that can only be reached by working..
maybe they're the people in the family who can support them, maybe they want to work now and get the early retirement, lots of reasons, really..
hope you'd understand..

This link is an audio explaining why the same company why the very little holiday but one thing you put that isn't true... nobody is happy and content with it. They just don't know of a way out or don't believe they are capable of a way out.
