Obsidian is now more commonly used as an abrasive, as in sand paper. It is naturally formed by sand being super heated by volcanic action and turned into a glass with lots of carbon included (hence the black color).

It absorbs anger. I have a chunk of obsidian in my car, along with an amethyst crystal, moonstone, and rose quartz. I think it can also be used for scrying.
