This is not a slant on anyone - I am merely doing a bit of research into what peoples attitudes are towards immigration racism ..the whole shahbang .. ! Do you think that Americans should call themselves just that ..Americans ... or is it OK! for people to call themselves by another countries nationality first....eg: Italian/American African/American .. Irish/American .... Mexican/American..... Do you think it is Un-American to say another countries name before America.... ?

No, it's not un-American but I don't think that giving ourselves these "titles" is unhealthy. These "titles" are dividing us and causing racism. We should drop the titles and just claim ourselves as Americans.

Good point, it's something I've considered as being a question worth asking here.
I do not understand why someone from the 'States wouldn't want to be American and insist on putting some lame prefix on their nationality.
It was explained to me before as follows: The American nation is still relatively new and their history is little more than a few hundred years old, whereas in GB we have thousands of years. As a result of this some people still hold onto what they regard as their history from the "old country".
What is lacking is a sense of history, although the formation of the American nation is a rich and exciting time in the history of mankind, although the slaughter of the native people wasn't great but we can't judge them ousing today's morals.
The first white settlers there really were trailblazers and adventurers. Can you imagine now doing what they did then with so little resourses and assistance? People would think you were mad.
I believe if you're born in the 'States then you're an American, pure and simple.
People should have pride in their country and try not to segregate themselves by putting some made up partially ethnic prefix onto their real nationality. All this does is further split an already ethnically defined country.
I hope, as time goes on, the American people will forget about this nonsense and concentrate on being American and have pride in where they are born, raised and live.
PS I really like the US and the folks there. Great place for a holiday.

I am a Black-American and proud.
America is a melting pot of different types of people, it's what we pride ourselves on.
Immigration has always been an issue; whichever group that comes in en masse catches hell, eg the Mexicans, just like the Irish and the Italians, Jews, Germans, and others who came before them.
History does repeat itself and it is again.
It is fine to call yourself whatever you like, because at the end of the day we're all Americans, black, white, Asian, etc.
Most of us are quite assimilated in spite of the fact that we have specific ethnic identities that we identify with.
It is what makes us unique.

Nobody decides to write down African-American
or Mexican-American. The US Government says
to fill out your paper work that way to get in the country.
Then once you are here you may drop it or keep it.
Some just get use to it after putting it on paper after paper.
A few idiots here thought it would be a good idea to have a
little extra title, so they took it up. It will still be around
for a while. It started when the first boats arrived.
Those English, they sure like to keep things in order.
List, list, list, label, label, label..........

I don't think that there should be terms like "african-american" or "indian american". I believe that that just makes people look at color. If you were born here, you're an american

I think that is a bad idea and encourages racism. I am British, not Nordic/English! I think it is better to consider your nationality and ethnicity to be different things and not try to confuse them into one.

No, I don't think it is really un-American. It just seems kind of complicated. After all, we are who we are, and labels won't change that, or make it any more prominent.
