Because in American society, TV is about the only way a huge amount of people get info about the world (among a large amount of other things, as well). It plays such an integral role in their perceptions of themselves, the tastes and interests, and the world around them, they tend to accept whatever it portrays without question.
In short, they don't like to think.

Its because they don't want to take the time and find out the truth about the culture. they think if its on tv or in a film, its correct.

people are ALWAYS judging me everyday. They look at me & think that I'm upset (not so). If there is nothing to smile about, why go around looking like a moron grinning all the time?

because some peoples brains are sort of brainwashed by the television because they are narrow minded and are to lazy to reference what they have seen.
