We have only had photography for about 150 years so for earlier pictures you need paintings. At http://www.allposters.com/gallery
They have 300000 images you can search by topic or for world landscapes or cityscape's to get artist names and small images. Most will also be available in the collections of art museums but at multiple sites. You will just have to ignore those from the USA.

This could help but requires a lot of efforts:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

on the other hand there could be a more painful yet fruitful way to go simply on any search (Yahoo) and use following key words or combinations of them:

history century 15th ...20th persons events

and yes, pls. do your search on images or pics tab not www, if that is what you want.

Hope this was helpful.
