Hmmm... The last three CDs I bought from current performers (as opposed to classics) were these:

CAKE -- don't know which CD I bought last, because I have all but their first. Love 'em -- my MP3 burner says they're alternative, I love the way they sound, their lyrics, and the fact that they've got a trumpet in the band. Lots of variety in their songs; some almost have a country sound to them ("Walk On By," though I hate country and it's one of my favorites), some have a hard-charging rock beat ("Italian Leather Sofa"), some are straight-up funky ("Short Skirt/Long Jacket"), and some are just too cool for words ("Sheep Go To Heaven").

Nellie McKay -- the most in-your-face virtuoso talent of any performer since, I dunno, Mozart? Nellie writes, plays and sings her own songs, she has incredible vocal range, and she comes up with brilliant, biting lyrics that you can't tell whether they're wistful or satiric... or maybe both. She has some songs that edge over into rap ("Sari"), some that could be Fifties ballads ("I Wanna Get Married"), some that defy description ("Ding Dong"). And through it all she has this clear, sweet voice that you just love to listen to. I haven't yet bought her latest CD ("Pretty Little Head"), but I played her first one ("Get Away From Me," something of a snipe at Norah Jones) back to back on a long road trip and didn't get tired of it.

Samantha Murphy: Samantha pretty much defines "up and coming." She has a small enough fan base that you feel like you Discovered Her, and that's cool -- but do so fast because she's working on her second CD. Her first one, "Somewhere Between Starving and Stardom," has almost as much musical range as Nellie, but without the in-your-face aggressiveness. Samantha's songs range from the thumping, pounding rock of "At The Laundromat" or "I Wanna Go Home," to the moving affirmation of "Christopher Street" (which includes the lyric that gives her CD its title, a description of her place in the arc of her career). She also writes, plays and sings her own songs, with some very capable backup musicians on her first CD.

Links to the respective musicians' Web sites in the Sources field. Open them one at a time, because Cake and Samantha play sample tunes automatically after you open the sites. Give 'em a listen and see what you think.

And as someone who has, from time to time, made a living based at least in part on royalties of one kind or another, thank you for buying music! :-)
