I met or exceeded all of their hiring criteria and sent my resume within a few days of the job posting on the internet. I have some fairly unique credentials and felt I had a real shot, but they never even called me for an interview.

They posted the job on the internet only 3 weeks ago. Given the holidays and the fact that this is a big company with a bureaucratic structure, they wouldn’t have had time to review resumes, conducted interviews, and pick a candidate.

My thought is that they either didn’t like my resume or had already picked an inside candidate all along and were following company policy by posting the job on the internet.

What do you think? Is there any point in emailing back and asking them what happend? The company has other jobs I'm interested in, but if they screend me out based on my resume then I don't see any point in applying for jobs in the future.

If I knew why they rejected me I would have a better idea of what to do next.

Chances are that many people applied for the job, and someone else fitted the job just as well as you did. As for emailing them back, what's the worst that can happen? I think it is a good idea, they only thing they can do is to not respond. You may even find out why they chose someone else (therefore how to improve your resume possibly?). It might even make them look over their records again to see if they missed you out.
Give it a try.

Large companies put their resumes through an automatic screening process that searches for keywords. For example, if you are great with Excel, but do not list it as Microsoft Excel on your resume, the software program that the company sends resumes through may not pick up on your Excel skills. Research on how to write resumes that will be screened via computer programs. And in the end, there are always people who fit the qualifications perfectly. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that you are somewhat new at looking for a real job, because you can get let down dozens of times when you are perfect for a position. That company received a lot of great resumes, and there are many reasons why a great candidate like you did not get picked, do not take it personally.

This sometimes happened. Of course it could have been your Resume that let you down. Maybe it was not well written or did not highlight you unique skills. Consider getting it professionally written to give yourself the best chance.

I would suggest that you write and extremely polite email stating that you were really keen to work for xxx company as you felt that your unique skills (state a few here) would be very interesting to them and that you particularly liked the company because (state here). Say how disappointed you were not to be called for an interview but that you are always ready to learn from YOUR mistakes. Would they be able to take a short time to give you some feedback so that you can apply to their company again.

Good luck.

You have to believe this. A company or a hiring manager for a particular position is looking for a particular kind of person. Every other person seems to be out of place for them. They may call you for interview sometimes for statistical reasons but will not select you finally. It is just like when a straight guy is looking for a woman and you being a man approach him hoping he is gay.
A large company generally has a lot of applications. You will not believe how many people think they are a perfect fit. They can only select one of them depending upon the traits they are looking for and then screening all those candidates further.

I hate to bust your bubble, but sometimes they are only looking to see what's out there in the world. The current position is paying XX dollars, and if they hired someone from the outside, how much more would they have to pay.

I have gone on interviews before, they asked me to come back for the second interview. I thought that they would not waste their time if they were not going to consider me for the position. Wrong they already had a person in mind that worked there, and they were only doing their homework!!

I have learned not to billed up my hopes until they call and say can you start work on xx date?

Rejection hurts but look at it this way, God has something better in store for you.

Definitely go back to them and see if you can get yourself a job!

The current Starbucks CEO is one of the wealthiest men in America... imagine where he would be if he didn't go back to the original founder of Starbucks and ask for the job he was originally denied for.

Best of luck!
