ok so what exactly is an appositive?

ok so i need to know what an appositive is for my english project that is due in 3 days. my teacher is out sick and we have a sub who doesn't understand it any bettter than we do so can't help really. i ahve the definition off of dictionary.com, but i don't understand what it means. it says, "a word or phrase in appostition" i don't understand what it means by apposition.
please help if you can!!

appositive according to my dictionary is and adjective.

meaning=

describes words or phrases that refer to the same person or thing and have the same relationship to other sentence elements

and Apposition means=

The Relationship between two usually consecutive nouns or noun phrases that refer to the same person or thing and have the same relationship to other sentence elements


In the sentence
"My son, an actor, lives with me"

"My son, and Actor" is an example of apposition

An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it. The appositive can be a short or long combination of words. Look at these examples:

The insect, a cockroach, is crawling across the kitchen table.

The insect, an ugly cockroach, is crawling across the kitchen table.

The insect, an ugly cockroach with hairy legs, is crawling across the kitchen table.

The insect, an ugly, hairy-legged cockroach that has spied my bowl of Frosted Flakes, is crawling across the kitchen table.

All that is in between the word insect, ..........., is crawling, etc. are appositives.
