MSU and U of M are both excellent schools, with many, many programs. The differences would be in such areas as:
1) entrance requirements: it is harder to get into U of M.
2) strength of programs: each program has a different national standing; U of M has highly ranked Engineering and Business Programs, for example. MSU has a strong Supply Chain Management program, Veterinarian Medicine Program, etc.
3) the campus itself: Michigan State has a beautiful, huge, self-contained campus in East Lansing. U of M is really 3 or 4 campuses sprinkled inside the urban setting of Ann Arbor.

There performances at the football games. No really one is an accredited by the DOE as an actual University with all the rules and all the structure therein. The other is more of a party school. That one is the Michigan STATE University the other has satellite campuses and is a bit, not much, but a bit cheaper. They are together known as the University of Michigan but in reality they have 4-6 campuses spread throughout the upper and lower peninsulas.

US News and World Report ranks the University of Michigan 17th and Michigan State University in the high 70s in a college ranking list. I go to U of M but have been to Michigan State. Michigan State has better food and nicer dorms, but the campus isn't walkable and the programs aren't as good except for communications, veterinary medicine, and a couple other ones. U of M programs typically rank in the top 10 in the nation but they broader and more liberal arts based. That means there is no journalism major, only English. There is no international relations major, just political science with an "emphasis" on world politics. If you want something specific and have to choose between the two schools, make sure U of M has it. If you are undecided, or like me world politics seems just fine, come to U of M. U of M is also harder to get into. So you have to have the grades.

Michigan State is a very good state university -- but it is the 11th best school in the Big Ten.
Michigan State is one of the best public universities in the countries (behind Berkeley and Virginia on the undergraduate level, and only behinf Berkeley on the graduate level)
If you have a choice -- it is clear -- Michigan.
