Remember when every sitcom and TV show had catchy theme songs with fun lyrics. What the hell happened to that?

Cutting costs...

It costs money to have someone produce a song. Add to the singers with the song and there's more money being spent. Also add, whenever a theme song is played, especially if the show is lucky enough to go into repeats, royalties get paid.

It's just cheaper NOT to have a song with lyrics, from a TV point of view. I miss that too.

I think a lot of the lack of sing-a-long songs have to do with Mark Snow, (he did the music for The Rookies, X-Files, Milinium, etc.), and Mike Post, (Hill Street Blues, The A-Team, Magnum PI, etc.).

They also did some sing-a-long songs, but the work they're best known for are all instrumental.

Also, networks want to keep the intro short and sweet so they can slip an additional ad in there.

Many shows still have theme songs, such as Desperate Houseweives and Grey's Anatomy.
Due to the rise in popularity of reality shows, many shows have an untraditional format including a lack of theme songs.
I do miss those theme songs though.
Especially Friends.

I think it is to put more time for the show. Plus you don't have to pay for musicians and writers.
