I mean, they both made stupid mistakes that pretty much cost them their careers; the only difference is that the media tore Raffy apart, while Marky-Mark is still sittin' pretty with a possible Hall of Fame nomination. I, for one, think this is beyond rediculous.
Rafael Palmeiro is one of few players in the history of baseball to have at least 3000 hits and 500 home runs. He's just never been a media-central player (until his debaucle, that is).
Mark McGuire is known mostly for being a slugger and breaking the single-season home run record.
Does this mean that hitting a lot of home runs in one season means more than a solid, 20-year career? If you study both of their careers, Palmeiro outshines McGuire in every offensive category (except home runs, slugging and OBP).
Does anyone have a (hopefully non-biased) answer as to why anyone would prefer McGuire being in the Hall over Palmeiro?

I think black and hispanic players get beat up more often than white players. It has to do with the fan base but also media representation. I was trying to think of a recent white baseball player that was really beat up and the only name I can come up with is John Rocker and it took Hitler kind of remarks. White outlandish sports stars in general (Giants Tight-End... Jeremey Shocker, for example) get treated a whole lot better than their black or hispanic counterparts who often require alot more time before acceptance takes place (Charles Barkely, Ali, etc..). With the growing number of hispanic players in sports, especially in baseball, I think it will be a matter of time before certain walls are broken.
Neither Palmeiro or Big Mac deserve to be in the hall because of steriod use. Neither does Bonds. Despite people's feelings on the matter, it changes nothing. Bonds re-signed, Big Mac isn't being hit with much dirt on this, Canseco was ridiculed when he wrote his book, Sosa/Palmeiro are looking to join teams. So we either accept steriod use or not. If baseball allows Bonds to play and apparently they have... then the decision regarding steriod use has already been made and with that Palmerio deserves to be in the hall (as does Bonds and Mac). I disagree but that's the way it's leaning...

"I Have NEVER used steroids. Never, Ever, Period." That's why.
Rafael blantantly lied to a grand jury. At the time people saw him as the big winner in the congressional hearings, but a couple of months later he was the bigger loser and lier. Palmeiro went through his entire career as a fan favorite, he was a spokesman for the game, and seemed to be a perfect player to look up to. Then, that all came to a crashing halt. McGwire, never gained the player status with the fans that Palmeiro did. Both are guilty as charged and unfortunely shared a part in the roid filled 1990's. I'm currently not a fan of either so this is a non-biased answer. Although several years ago I would have claimed to be a fan of both players.
Good Question.

Mark Mcgwire was a huge fan favorite throughout his career. People liked Raffy but not as much as Mcgwire. Also, Mcgwire has never tested positive, and when Raffy did get busted he threw his teammates under the bus. That doesn't get you any love.

Well, I think you may be taking the fact that before the steriod crap Mark was on pace to break the record. Overwhelmed with media he retired.. Nevertheless, i won't say that Palmeiro is not talented, he is dam talented. Let's not forget 40/40 club, and things like that as well.

Simple. Palmeiro tested + for roids. Big mac didn't. Also Mac didn't commit perjury in front of congress.

McGuire had more notoriety first as an olympic Team USA member, then as one of "The Bash Brothers". There was not one teenage boy who didn't have an A's poster in their room in the late 80's.
Plus, he was born and raised in Los Angeles, where he went to USC (famous school).

Both may have made mistakes, but both are also very honrable players.
People just favor Mark more than Rafael whether he was better not. Also, Rafael got caught, Mark was never tested positive for the steroids thing.

McGuire kept his mouth shut and let people think he's an idiot. Palmeiro has opened his mouth several times, and has left no doubt he's one.
That's why.
