First- Yeah I know I’m a geek, so those who like to leave like “hey screw you” “who cares?” and “you’re an idiot” take a break.

Second, a friend asked me this question but how can you possibly compare the two (lets not include the most recent episodes 1,2 and 3 of Star Wars).

Lord of the Rings: Tolkien- brilliant in the hands of now epic director (King Kong-possibly The Hobbit) Peter Jackson tackles an epic tale, with epic filming
(The tale of time itself).

Then you have Star Wars a space opera that is beyond epic with different planets let alone worlds. George Lucas writing and directing it-quite the battle-no pun intended. This man used to trilogies (Indiana Jones-now to be a 4) but also handled Tolkien-like worlds before such as Willow, Labyrinth, and Land Before Time.

It’s so hard to pick between the two, is it even possible?

I'm an old fart, so I got to see all of the Star Wars movies in the theatre. I was 4 when I saw A New Hope.

Having said that, I think I'd have to go with Star Wars. The problem I have is that Return of the Jedi is sort of weak. When you compare the 2 side-by-side, LOTR is definitely superior. There's not a weak moment in the trilogy.

But...for nostalgia reasons and because I grew up on 'em, the Star Wars movies will always be my favorite trilogy.

The prequel movies weren't better just different. They DID gross a hell of a lot @ the box offices all over the world They went way overboard with CGI in Ep # 2 & 3 (which wasn't available in the 70's & 80's when Episodes 4-6 came out). The prequel however explains or answers all or almost all of my lingering questions. Also exactly how Anakin was tricked into joining the dark side. I like trilogy #2 also & esp @ the end of Ep. 6 (ROTJ) when Luke sees an "apparition" of Yoda, Obi Wan Kenobi & his own "redeemed" father as Hayden Christiansen not some old man no name that never acted in anything else. Technically Anakin "died" when he became Darth Vader so I guess that's why Lucas made that change in ROTJ. I like the digitally enhanced versions of episodes 4-6 & I like the newer Episode 4 When Jabba shows up & Han Solo steps on his tail . We Even see Boba Fett (Jango Fett's clone son bounty hunter) for a second in that version.

Star Wars

The best trilogy in my opinion is neither, but Die Hard. John McClean is the shiznit (I would prefer to use the actual word). Both Star Wars and LOTR were magnificent, no doubt, but Die Hard III with Samuel L. Jackson (a complete waste in Star Wars) and Jeremy Irons was the best. The second film in all three trilogies was awkward, but Die Hard II was a roller coaster. And the best thing about all three was the first glimpse at a world you have only dreamed of. Die Hard with the Nakatomi Building disaster was mind bending. Thanks for letting me vent.

It is very difficult to choose...but I was a Star Wars fan ever since I was a little girl so I have to choose Star Wars...I mean, for the time they were made, with the limited technology for a move before its time, they were just incredible...I definitely prefer the original versions too, not the new remastered ones. I was so ANGRY when they swithed Anakin Skywalker's ghost to Hayden Christianson at the end of RotJ! That is one of my favorite parts to the movies. So when, the original theatrical versions came out on DVD I had to buy them, so nowI have 2 sets on DVD and 3 sets on VHS (The originals and two different remastered versions). I'm a geek too, but geeks rule!

I absolutely detested LOTR and refused to see the 2nd and 3rd ones. The old Star Wars are brilliant, and I have a personal weakness for the Indiana Jones trilogy.

The best trilogy I've ever seen is Takashi Miike's Black Society Trilogy which consists of Shinjuku Triad Society, Rainy Dog, and Ley Lines. Awesome! Watch them.

Hands down, its the Star Wars Trilogy. Its the parent to all that followed, including LOTR. Much of the premise of LOTR is taken directly from Star Wars.

It's incredibly hard. The Lord of the Rings was entirely epic, and I got to experience that awesomeness firsthand, instead of having to vcr, as I did the Star Wars movies. So I'm tempted to say LORT is better, but I just know I'm wrong. Star Wars is too great, it is too classic. I think it wins in this contest.

I would have to say I like Lord of the Rings just slightly better, but that's only because I also am in love with Tolkien's books.
