Also now when im driving and i put my foot down the car kind of splutters like its running out of petrol but its full of petrol could this be related to the knocking sound,
I asked a mechanic about it and he said it could be something wrong with the gearbox.

The knocking is really bad when i start the car from cold but when the engine warms up the noise isnt as bad and when i put my foot on the clutch the noise goes completely,
Also everytime i brake or slow down theres a big knock coming from the engine its almost like metal against metal

Its real hard to diagnose on here...
If it's a knock knock it could be fuel related or top end problem
Or if it's a KNOCK KNOCK / BANG BANG that generally means trouble of expensive proportions.
Thats assuming it's knocking in time with your engine.
If it's an intermittent kind of knocking, that could well be a gearbox issue but i think from what you've described you could well be looking at a replacement engine as the cheapest option.

Try putting it into second gear while going downhill at about 35MPH, if you hear a machine-gunning type sound the big ends are gone. This means scrap and replace. Does it do so when you start it up? The way you describe it is like it's getting too hot, which means it should be fine when it's cold unless you've already destroyed the engine.
If it's fine when cold you need to find out why it's overheating.
If the car knocks when revved while out of gear then the gearbox is ruled out (I learned most mechanics have little idea what a fault really is, they simply go by what the book says). I can't say for sure without hearing it but a gearbox will produce a whine or growl, not a knock. If anything in the gearbox caused a knock it couldn't work.
Unfortunately you probably have a big end knock causing this, but check it when cold, if it's fine then when revved to about 3500-4500RPM don't drive it anywhere until you have fixed the coolant system fault, but if you been driving it like tis you likely have ruined the engine by now.

You have 2 problems here, first when the noise goes away when the clutch is pressed it's the gearbox but that will have no relation to the spluttering, thats an engine issue. To be honest if your asking this type of question and have little idea about the problem your unlikley understand the answers or to be able to fix it your self, get a professional opinion or better still a few. Sorry to sound harsh but it's realistic.

you have a rod knocking, its about to let go and fly through the block, you need either A; new rod bearings B; an engine from a junkyard (probably the cheapest fix) or C; a whole new car (probably the most expensive fix) since your engine is screwed anyway, you could try putting slick 50 in it good luck

I'm agreeing, if it is all the time and worse when you step on the gas, chances are its that the engine is shot. I work in a garage, and I've seen this quite a few times. I'm suggesting to take it to a shop, have a technician look at it to make sure, any technician knows what that sound sounds like. if it is, buy a new car, if its not, have them take a look at it and go from there.

Could be a valve spring busted, It could be carboration. Yes this could be related to the knocking sound. It could be the rod bearings. My husband said it it not from the gearbox. A good Mechanic can put it on a machine and find out for you. My husband told me to tell you this.

Could be your big end bearings.I had the same type of thing with a Vauxhall Cavalier a few years ago.The spluttering could also be down to a blocked fuel filter or injectors.

Knocking from the engine is never a good sign.
Get a proper guy to look at it then get rid asap

Are you using the correct grade of gas? Or... You might have pumped some "bad" fuel that has been watered? -Or- You could have a bad fuel filter? -- Or -- It could need a tune-up? -- Or -- most anything... The first thing that I would do would be to take it to a qualified auto-tech to check it out.
Hope you find out what is giving you the "sputters"?

Sounds to me like "detonation".
Low gas octane, or faulty knock sensor on the engine, or bad ignition timing are the most common.
