For my first baby, the nurse broke my water at 10 cm when I was about to push so we all expected it. This time I am 37 weeks pregnant and nervous that I'll be in public or something when my water breaks. When it happens is it scary? I know it doesn't hurt but was it a huge surprise? I would like to know some stories of water breaking for you women out there.

I have been pregnant several times and this Dec. was the first time my water broke on its own. I woke at 3:40 am, feeling pressure. I got up went to the bathroom and could not. Couldn't sleep so I went to my computer. I had a contraction and then pop it went all over my computer chair and floor.
I actually sat there for awhile because I had no idea where all that water was coming from at first and then it dawned on me that it was my water bag. LOL!
So that was my waterbag rupture experience.

Well, I have had 4 kids. The first time it broke in the middle of the night. I woke up feeling like I had to use the bathroom, and it just happened on the toilet.
With my second and third it did not break until I started pushing (I don't dialate until I start pushing either, always threw the docs for a loop).
With the last one I had a mean Doc who wanted to shove me off into a room, although I warned her that the baby was about to come. The water broke just as she is taking another look reassuring me that I wasn't having the baby for hours yet... it burst all over her face :), then I had the baby 10 minutes later.

First baby....water broke as I was getting in the car to go to the hospital after 36 hours of labor. I was only 1 cm though. : ( 42 weeks gestation.
Second baby....19 weeks gestation (I'm not kidding!) I was in bed and felt really wet. Thought I'd had an accident during the night. Next morning, same thing. Went to the dr. was put on bedrest. At 24 weeks I was put in the hospital, still on bedrest. She was born at almost 28 weeks.
Third baby....37 weeks. dh and I broke my water the old fashioned way. : ) We were just getting finished, and it gushed all over both of us.

When it happens, yes it's a surprise. If the baby's head is fully engaged, though, it's more of a trickle than a gush usually. : )

I was almost 2 weeks overdue, and scheduled to be induced the next day. I just finished a big lunch and laid down on the couch. I woke up suddenly (still don't know what woke me up), stood up, and my water broke. Luckily it was in my house, but not like it made a difference. It's not scary, but it's not super-pleasant either. It came squishing out - a lot - more than I expected, and I had to go to the hospital with a full-size towel between my legs. It wasn't scary, but being my first pregnancy, it really made me realize it was happening - now! No worries though - when you're "ready to pop" and you're water breaks (even in public) people are very nice about it.

The only time my water broke when I wasn't in the hospital already, was with my first. However, it was just a slow leak. It felt like I forgot to wipe after I went to the bathroom, so I wiped and went back to bed, then I noticed that it felt all wet again. It never really "busted" and poured out any where. However, I have a friend who I was with when her water broke at home. She just got this weird look on her face and started to cry. (she's kind of a wimp though) However, I think it would be quite a startle, but not really scary. It's just like getting good news that finally you get to get that baby out and hold it!!!!
Good Luck!!!!

My water broke at night. In retrospect, I had a lot of signs that labor was coming, but I didn't know it at the time.

I wasn't due for a week, but at 4:55 that day, I spontaneously told my HR department that it was my last day at work.

We went to bed on the late side, and I was chattering away so much that my boyfriend went into the guest room to get some sleep. He said I was talking nonsense and getting mad at him for not listening.

After being asleep for 45 minutes, I sat straight up in bed (no easy accomplishment at 39 weeks!) and had water rushing out. I jumped out of bed and stood on the hardwood floor trying to process what was going on.

It doesn't hurt, it isn't scary. It's a lot of water, BUT not gross or odd. We left for the hospital and the mattress/sheets were soaked. I thought for sure it would be gross when we returned home, but nothing was even stained.

I'm only 25wks pregnant with my first so my water hasn't broken however i have the same concerns as you... i don't want it to happen in public! lol

Was talking about this subject with my mom and some aunties the other day and heard an interesting recount:

An aunt was wearing light coloured pants and was in line at the post office. Her water broke right then and there! The lady behind her had a young son who was giggling because "that lady didn't make it to the potty in time mommy". She drove herself to the hospital - she said she was more embarrassed than anything! lol

I hope mine happens at home!!!! lol.

Good luck with the soon-to-arrive baby :)

I'm not going to be any help. With my first, my water broke at home when I was in bed. With the second, it didn't break until I was at the hospital.

So, if you are in public, just call an ambulance, and go have the baby. Most people will understand. And those that don't aren't worth caring about.

Congratulations on the new little one.

hi-despite what you may think.
only 10-15% of pregnant womens water breaks in public.
most everyone else feels just a trickle or their water has to be broken during labor
I dont think you have anything to be nervous or worry about.

Im 37 weeks too--lets go babies!, lol
