The Astonishing X-Men is fantastic. It's being hailed as the resurgence of the X-Men. It's witty and the art is good.

Civil War is also good stuff.

Y: The Last Man is an absolutely amazing one. It's genius in it's premise and the writer has won numerous awards. A couple Eisners I think and Best writer from Wizard Magazine. It's Vertigo, but I don't think you shold go strictly for a comic because of publisher. This one is top notch. My favorite of the past few years.

I've included a link to IGN choice for Top 10 Marvel Comics. That should give you variety.

I would certainly recommend the graphic novel "Arkham Asylum: a serious house on a mad world" or perhaps "Batman: the Long halloween" however they are DC comics. I would say "Civil War" for Marvel
