Here are some things for you to consider:

1) Your modem may be faulty - yes there is most definitely good and bad modems. A bad modem will often cause frequent disconnections. I've had a few of those before...

Then, check with your Internet Service Provider to confirm that they support your modem protocol. For example, if you have a V92 protocol for your modem make sure that your Internet Service Provider supports that. If they don't, that could certainly cause some problems.

Also, when you're on the phone with them, see what dial-up settings they recommend for minimal disconnections. Get them to go through your dial-up settings to confirm which ones should be set.

2) Your telephone line may be faulty or may need to be 'cleaned' - whatever the heck that means. If there is static on your phone line when you pick up your phone, you can be sure that it's going to affect you when you dial up to the Internet. You may need your telephone company to look at your telephone line.

3) Lastly, your Internet Service Provider itself may be to blame, whether they admit it or not. When it comes to dial-up Internet service, I've been with a lot of Internet Service Providers in my life and I can tell you that there is definitely a difference between some of them. If their offer sounds too good to be true (Internet pretty much for little or no cost) then expect that their reliability isn't going to be very good. There's always a catch...

You should expect to pay anywhere from $10 - $25/month for dial-up - anything less then that and I would be wary. You want to do business with a professional Internet Service Provider that offers reliable service with very little disruption and if/when they do lose service temporarily, you want that service restored ASAP (with some Internet Service Providers I've seen some horrible situations with service sometimes taking 3 days to get restored, all for no good reason at all). You also want good technical support times too. 24/7 should be standard these days.

Good luck... and of course like many others have said dial-up is always going to be second-rate to services like cable or DSL. That said, you should still be able to expect some decent service for the money you pay out for dial-up every month.

Keep trying until it connects... or get DSL or any other internet that does not have a dial up. Dial ups are connected with phone lines so who knows how many people are trying to connect at the same time?? That might be the problem..
