Yes, that was real sterotypical. I'm from "down south" and okay yes some rap does go way out of it but then there are rapers that do sing about positive stuff. There are many christian artist that rap about God and how to live a good and pure life. Rap isn't the only genre of music that sings about smoking weed and what not cause I have heard of Rock, Country, and so more where all they talk about in their songs is pointless stuff that you are complaining "All" rap says. Many people listen to it because that is what they were raised listening to, others listen to it because it is something they can relate to. They themselves are going through the same stuff. Talking about all that being their fault, not true. I know from experiance how hard it is to live when you have no money living in the dumps. The for most it's the teachers to blame and the school they go to. People can't afford to go to schools where they have the best teachers. Yes, they can improve their life but somehow they have to make a living. Other people have their own types of music they like to listen to and they don'e complain about the types of music you listen to. If you don't like it then don't listen to it.

Undoubtedly for the same reason that they listen to all types of music-they enjoy it. I enjoy all kinds of music including rap. All genres of music have what i refer to as the good, the bad and the ugly. The good is suitable for listening to while your grandma is around (Unwritten by Natasha or S.E.X by Lyfe), the bad is the music that cant be played on the radio without being edited and the ugly is the stuff to risque for airplay. This exists in all types of music-as all music serves a purpose, simply to entertain the listener. You might be surprised to know that most rappers dont lead the lives that they sing about-but others have and are using the music to make money and move on. There are plenty of rappers who contribute to society and some who dont, the same is true for pop/rock singers, blues artists, etc. Bottom line is people listen to what they like and if they don't then they won't
Hope this helps you to understand-you don't have to agree with what other people do but you should respect them enough to agree that it is their choice.

now now now, easy killer. For some people, no matter the race, writing down lyrics is a way of expressing creativity and releasing stress. Yes the beats are simple, and often repetitive, but they're still enjoyed by much of the population. Artists like Twista, Lil Wayne, Yung Joc, TI and others are able to write and rap about personal experiences, and because others can relate, it sells, the songs get played, and publicity follows. Sure some grew up with bad lives, but in some cases it wasnt their fault. Parents might've been substance abusers, alcoholics, or whatever. As long as they're successful, it shouldnt matter what type of music they perform. Also, if you dont like rap... dont listen to it.
But for me, I'm mostly metal/rock, but whenever I work out or something, I listen to rap, because the heavy beats and bass gets adrenaline flowing, letting me work out harder, and get more out of my energy. Plus its awesome to listen to at any time.

There's a kind of music for every taste. When I don't understand others' tastes I just keep reminding myself that what I consider as good music (works with anything from books to food, clothing, sports and so on) could probably be considered like **** by someone else. Statistically it's true and morally it's also true. If you want your tastes to be respected you have to take part in a world where every taste and opinion are respected. Including rap/hip hop music...

Im not a big fan of modern rap myself - but the stuff i liked and actually still do is from the early 90's. I know I know - WHAT!?!? I like it now - cause its history and art (its the roots). I really dont get today's rap. But i originally started listening to it cause it made me feel cool. It was a hot item in its day. Gave me that bada$$ feel when i was listening to it. Now... ive moved on.

To me i actually like rap but not all it actually depends who you listen to a dude that is rewording what another guy said months ago or a dude expressing him or her self in their own way. Rapper these days only talk about certain things like you said smoking pot killing people etc. Every rapper in the course of their career will talk about killing people and smoking but if they base their whole career on that then they wouldnt sell.

Ummmm looks like the media has roughed you up a little. You're judging hip-hop in the air. The Industry effed it up by letting all these dumb rappers like 50 cent, Lil Jon, mike jones, paul wall have the spotlight. The south killed hip-hop enough said!
If you really want to know why hip-hop is good, then i suggest you study it's roots. I will make a small list of good hip-hop you should checkout--they call it old-school hip-hop.
Nas - The World Is Yours (study the flow and poetry...a popular song in the mid 90's)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zih23JnmUVI
KRS-One - MC's Act Like They Don't Know (Mr. Hip-hop...knows everything about it)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rjVBHJVIbE
Common - I Used To Love HER (personifies hip-hop through a female...incredible stuff)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37JQ0YCNIkc
I mean there's a lot of good rappers today that you don't hear about. You have to pretty much look for it...2007 will be a good year for hip-hop with rappers like papoose and saigon releasing something. these rappers dont glorify sex, drugs, and bling. just dont judge hip-hop in the air. there's a reason why people like it. if you ask someone who listend to hiphop in the 90s then you will get another view--that it's disgusting music and aint worth listening to. you are right about how hip-hop sucks.just don't be ignorant...from this sample, you should be able to find good hip-hop.

That was really stereotypical, but I sort of agree with you.
Anyway.. people listen to rap because that's all MTV plays, and they feel the need to fit in and listen to people talking with poor grammar over synthesized drum beats.
And they watch rap videos with womens' vaginas and breasts jiggling out of their clothes, acting as toys and arm candy because it's put right in front of them, and they think it's what they should be watching.
I hate rap because it degrades women to a point where it's completely DISGUSTING.

Look people have different tastes and life styles, plus not all rap is bad. Its not their fault their lives are sometimes bad, people like you help them, do you think everybody does good in school too?? They didn't choose- it was brought upon them, people like you made them feel like it is their purpose
