You did it right, because you're increasing 300 by 54% (not just trying to find out what 54% of 300 is, like a couple of the above answers do). It's 300 + (300 x .54), which is 462. Maybe there were some additional instructions, or maybe the book's wrong?

I believe this question is a good one and the correct answer is 462. The wording could be taken in a number of different ways. I say give Dave the best answer. The instructions find the amount could be 300, 54% 462. More of a word game than a math problem.

Pull a CYA move. List both answers.
Show that a 54% increase to 300 results in 462
and that the amount of the increase was 162.

I think your answer is correct if the question is, "What will you have after you increase 300 by 54%?" But if the question is "What is the amount of the increase?" Then the answer should be 162. If neither of those matches your notes, perhaps there is an error in your notes.

To increase 300 by 54%, all you have to do is multiply 300 by (1 + 0.54), or 300(1.54)
300 x 1.54 = 462

With this type problem, just multiply the amount(300) times 1.(the percentage) so you.d have
300X1.54=462

try just 162....
if 462 was wrong, then your teacher might want you just to multiply 300 by 54% which would actually mean less, even though it says increase.
its a poorly worded question...you might bring that up
