I think you mean "layman's terms."

Pretty closely related - and often referred to as electro-magnetic field.
The electric part is the force or potential that causes the actual current or electron flow - each electron is surrounded by a magnetic field because of its negative charge, and when it flows, this magnetic field moves with it - hence, there is an electro-magnetic field which surrounds the conductor when current flows through it.
That's about it in a nut shell.
