why was america called the melting pot again? my one friend says its because we have a lot of diversity...another one says its because we had a big population.........???
help?

America was referred to as the melting pot because so many different cultures tend to get blended. I had a history teacher who referred to America as the SALAD BOWL, because each culture retains some of it's unique flavor and still adds to the overall flavor.

The idea of a melting pot is that you put things in and they get melted together and the individual things become indistinguishable from each other, but I'd have to say the U.S. is more of stew pot with different ingredients interspersed but still distinguishable (meat here, potatatoes there, some carrots, etc.).
Now I'm hungry and have to go.

The idea is that all the people melt together and create one identity. In Canada where I live it is said we are more of a Mosaic meaning although there are many people they maintain there disctinctiveness. ( I just had a funny thought not sure if you are aware of the tv series star trek but I gess this would make the US kind of like the Borg) A race that captures cultures and mkes them drones while ading their cultural distinctiveness to thier own. Note Im just adding attempted funny commentary not trying to slam USA. I love America.

I LIVE IN US AND FROM ASIA...
my feeling is us is a mosaic rather than a metlting pot...melting pot may not apply for even the big cities like ny,LA,Chicago
i love US and its a great place for immigrants .. after lving in 3 other contries ...I feel this is the place for immigrants to come and prosper!
