48. New Mexico and Arizona joined the Union in 1912, then nothing until Hawaii and Alaska although it's been a issue with Puerto Rico for years, but the Puerto Ricans have voted against statehood when it's come up.

In 1920 there were 48 states and in 1959 Hawaii and Alaska joined the Union!

48 states in 1920, since New Mexico and Arizona were added in January 6 and February 14 of 1912 respectively. It wasn't until 1959 that we added two more states ... Alaska and Hawaii.
