Yes this is normal behavior for many species of fish, and is particularly frequent in the larger cichlids. Often this is a sign of a mature male looking to stake out a teritory and create a "nest" for future spawning.

No this is not good, many fish will scavenge for food all the time as they would in the wild. The problem is terminal ingestion. The fish could get it stuck in its mouth or eat it and die. This happens more often they you would think. Get bigger gravel or another type of substrate.

It's pretty normal, they aren't actually eating them, just using their mouths to move the rocks. All is fine. Sometimes they do this before laying eggs and others just seem to do it on a regular basis without cause.

Yes, these cichlids are considered substrate spawners and it is their natural instinct to dig - it's a nesting instinct and common throughout most of the cichlid kingdom.

Yes this is fine. Some fish, like my Ram cichlid, picks up the rocks and spits them out, they basically clean them, and sometimes, they just mistake the rocks as food, get them in their mouth and spit em out :p It's perfectly normal behavior.
