Do we really need all the space in space? Why are stars and galaxies so far apart? Is there some cosmic reason why space needs to be so big?

I think that's just the way it all "settled" after the Big Bang. It's all still expanding, too.

But is space really that big? Or are we just very, very small...? All things are relative. If the bacterium in my little glass of water were capable of such thoughts, would they wonder why their ocean is so huge?

On a more practical level though, if you look at so-called "solid matter" on the atomic and sub-atomic scale, most of it is empty space. The bits of particles whirling about one another take up very little space and there are huge distances in between.

So maybe this is something inherent in the makeup of the physical Universe, both on the smallest scales and on the larger scales. Why? It just is. I don't know why.

But I do know that the way gravity works, if all the stars and galaxies were too close together, this would cause everything in the Universe to attract to each other, and the Universe would eventually "smush together" and implode on itself. Some people theorize that this will occur after many gazillion bajillion years and the current Universe will be destroyed and there will be a new Big Bang, and that possibly the Universe has already done this over and over already. I don't know for sure if anybody has definitively figured out mathematically if this is going to occur or not.

the universe is expanding and always has been and always will be, we dont need the space it is just there galaxies are so far apart because there is a small gravitational pull in everything even you, so the small particles come into contact with each other and stuck so the gravitational pulls became stronger and galaxies were formed in random places scatered throughout the universe, theres no pattern as to where they are.

It's expanding at roughly the speed of light and has been since the Big Bang 14 billion years ago giving a radius of aprox. 14 billion light years.

Have you ever seen a woman with a big enough closet? There may be entire galaxies reserved just for black shoes.

Space is Infinite.Things are so far apart because theybodies like their space. Dont you?

Only that if it were all a lot closer, life would be harder to maintain here. That's not really a why, but physics doesn't do why.
