because it was not the best thing for the country it would of completly destroyed the country. you can't put a president in Jail I thought he did the right thing then and more sure today. this country would have trial and then two or three years of appeals and that would of put us in a tragnic it was bad enough it happen. He did right by ending the way he did if you want more information then read about online ford pardon.

Watergate was little more than a political football. Most of us knew that, regardless of party. Gerald Ford knew that.
Twenty odd years later, the GOP struck back when Bill
Clinton got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
It was political leverage at it's best. A free ride to The
White House. And both parties got the most mileage they
could out of these two incidents.
For what's it worth, I'm an Independent.

Mr. Ford pardoned--not forgave (see definition of pardon)--Tricky Dicky to get that time in history over with and start the country healing. A trial would have just dragged it on and that was not what Mr. Ford wanted for his country. Nixon still paid for what he did... Mr. Ford was buried in Grand Rapids, Michigan, because that was his request and we honored his request.

Nixon would have to go on trial first and Ford did not want to continue discussing the Watergate scandal for years.

Ford didn't want the country to be in anymore turmoil than it already was.
So he made a very brave and unpopular decision and pardoned Nixon.
In the end it was the right thing to do for our country.

He said that he felt it was better to pardon Nixon so the country could put the whole Watergate affair behind. It cost him the election.

He didn't have the authority to jail him for one. Why wasn't Bill Clinton put in jail?
