was watching parky tonight and he chose fred astaire as the greatest dancer/singer of those times, but mum shouted at the box saying gene kelly was the man! Who's right, parky or mum??! :-)

Everybody remembers Gene Kelly's dance number from "Singing in the Rain", but not too many people can single out any of Fred's dance numbers, though there are a couple that I really enjoyed. Even I can't remember which movies they were from, though, so I'd give Gene my vote.

I dont like Musicals generally, because my Parents were Fanatical about them and always had them on Tele when i was a child or else dragged me off to the Theatre to see them. I dont like
Gene Kelly at all there is something Slimy and Saccarene Sweet about him . Fred Astaire,
and he is a good singer as well. There is two Dances I remember about him and like very much,The one where he is Tap Dancing
and dropping Fire Crackers to the Music, and The Continental
a Walzst with Ginger Rogers while Singing the song the Continental.My Father told me a story about him, that he was supposed to Enlist and go off to the First World War, but was turned down because he had a Heart Complaint, if that was the case he certainly lasted long . I think he was 8 8 when he died.
I dont know if this is true my Father could be wrong . My dad Died Years ago in 1972.

How can you choose between them? They were two very different singer/dancers. Fred was very sophisticated and you rarely saw him in casual clothes in his movies, he was a top hat and tails guy. Of course he wasn`t good looking but when you can move like he does, what does that matter! Gene Kelly was more of a down to earth `street` dancer, you could imagine him as a truck driver, he was casually dressed in his movies and he made his style of dancing look so easy(when of course it was anything but!) Gene Kelly was quite handsome, in an `old fashioned` way. Again he could move like an angel on ice! They both had more X Factor than any of the present day contestants.

They are two different styles of dance...but Gene Kelly...well I love Gene Kelly haha so Gene Kelly is the best. He played all his roles so well and his dancing was soooo amazing...he worked so hard to get where he did and Id rather watch his movies than Fred Astaires.

Both were fantastic dancers and all round entertainers but Gene appeared in better films overall. Therefore, I must agree with your Mum.

I would have to agree with your mum - Gene Kelly was some dancer and had so much more versatility

I agree with Parky. Kelly is too sickly sweet for my eyes.

It's a little like comparing oranges and...uhmm...tangerines.
Kelly was all about power. Astaire was all about grace.
But both dancers had absolutely PERFECT center.

I s'pose Fred was smoother but personally I liked Gene :)
