There is no set number of games. You need to finish in the top 8 in the conference to make the playoffs. Usually right around 90 pts is needed to make the playoffs. Teams get 2 pts. for a win, and 1 for an overtime or shootout loss. That means a team would need in the neighborhood of 40-45 wins with a few overtime losses in there. 90 pts does not ALWAYS make it, but if you look over the past 10 years, very few teams with 90 or more pts did not make the playoffs. Plymaker obviously did not do any research before he answered and doesn't know what he's talking about.

As mentioned before there is no automatic number a team needs to be in the playoffs a team simply has to win its division (6 divisions, 3 in each conference) OR be one of the 8 best teams in the conference. A team is given 2 points for a win and 1 for an OT or SO loss.

The division winners get the top 3 spots in each conference and 4-8 are determined by total points. So there are many years where the 4 and sometimes 5 seed will have a better record than the 3 seed but just played in a tougher division.

Unlike a bracket system if a low seed upsets a high seed in the early rounds they reseed the bracket and put the low seed near the bottom. IE if an 8 beats a 1 seed in the first round the 8 does not become the 1 seed they are still the bottom seed and have to play the highest seed that advanced.

16 teams in all make the playoffs (8 from each conference) and each round is a best of 7 so teams have to win 16 playoff games to win the cup.

There is not really a minimum number of wins needed to get into the playoffs. Instead, each team gets two points for a win and one point for an overtime shootout loss. The teams that get into the playoffs are the 32 teams that have the highest number of points in the two divisions.; the Patrick Division and the Norris Division,
From there the 16 teams in each division play each other (1st plays eighth, 2ND plays 7Th, etc) until only two teams are left in each division. Those two teams play each other and the winner goes to the Stanley Cup finals. The Stanley Cup finals are then played by the winner of each division. The Stanley Cup winning team has to win 16 games to become the Stanley Cup winner!

The team has to be in atleast 8th place in their division, so 16 teams make the playoffs, 8 from the Eastern League and 8 from the Western League.

More points than the 9th seed in your conference.

Actually, thats not true. You could have the same as the 9th seed, but then you have to have either more wins or a better GF/GA in order to make the last playoff spot in your conference.

wins doesn't matter its points. The new OT rules guarantee a winner but that one point for getting to the OT made a difference of a lot of teams and where they wound up for placement in the playoffs.

And 90 is NOT a guanantee.

A team must make more than 90 points to make the playoffs unless they get lucky that the league is very balanced in a particular season. Ninety points usually is not going to cut it.
