E.g. if I buy a phone from Carphone Warehouse or Phones 4U, can I still register the phone with Orange and keep my number? And would I still be entitled to an upgrade reward?

As long as you buy an Orange phone you can use your old SIM card in your new phone thus retaining your number!! This is the cheapest option. When registering the phone, obviously you would give them the number that the phone came with - this is to activate the phone. But once activated you can use any SIM card as long as it is an Orange SIM card. If however you buy a vodafone, T-Mobile, etc then you will have to have the phone unblocked first to be able to use your old Orange SIM card!!

You can just stick your old SIM in, that is the simplest answer. But some really old SIM cards may cause problems by not supporting the same things. There is usually an issue with changing phone numbers on the same network (ie they don't let you do it) but this might not apply to PAYG. Ask Vodafone or go into a Vodafone store to see if they can change the number over.

The process of transferring a number from one network to another is completely free. I've transferred my number from Vodafone to O2 and then back again and I've never been charged a penny - both companies even sent me a free SIM card. You don't need to stick with one network just to keep your number.

As for converting your new phone to connect to the Orange network - well, that may cost you. Many mobile phones are locked to a specific network and you may have to pay for the privilege of unlocking the phone. Probably best to find out before you buy a super phone!

Good luck!
