Nemesis isn't supported by an evidence. How about finding out that galaxies weren't part of OUR galaxy? This was a big debate in astronomy in the early 1900's. They finally resolved the issue with cephied variable stars.

how about the invention of the telescope. astronomy did exist before the telescope, but they thought the earth was flat, and that the sun orbited the earth. the first telescopes allowed many discoveries that lead to people being called heritics by the church of the time.

keplers law is a good one. Keplers law can be related analogously to many other scientific phenomena. You could write about how a fundamental law of astronomy was later used to desciribe mathematical elipsoids and other things. keplers law is also rigerously derived using some pretty interesting calculus but its basic derivation is very paletable to the layman.

How about the Big Bang Theory? You may not be the only one with the topic, but you are sure to stir up some controversy! It may even be kinda fun to research and write.
