Anyone who thinks coaches and players are at college to get an education are living in a dream world. College sports is one of the most lucrative businesses in the country. Even the average NFL team only sells 60,000 - 70,000 seats per game. Compare that to the 90,000 - 110,000 seats a top college program sells. Then add in the fact that college players don't make money and you can see why they would pay a coach $4M/yr. If he fills that stadium up, he's making the university way more than they're paying him. As for Saban being the right coach, look at what he did with Toledo, Mich St, and LSU. None of those programs were powerhouses before he took over and he made them national title contenders. Now add in the fact that Alabama has a rich college football history and a lot of prestige and you know he's going to be able to do the same for this program. Alabama will be a SEC title contender every year once he gets some high-rated recruits in there and will be worth every penny they are paying him.

Well, when you're the ugly girl at the school dance that no one wants to have wrap your arms around them, a money whore like Nick Saban looks good.
Hope they don't mind doing another search in 3 years, when Saban decides the pastures are greener somewhere else. Larry Brown ain't got nothing on Saban for changing addresses.

Alabama has interviewed 16 coaches who have all turned down the job.
The school wanted a quality replacement and Saban was the best thing available.

this is one of the stupidest things among many that bama has done lately.they are like the one idiot that thinks paying 6 million for a 1 mill. condo is a great bargain and makes the whole market blow up.it doesnt send a good message about the states priorities either.that same board of trustees just lost a good coaching candidate because they wouldn't pay more than $300,000 at U.A.B. saban is a good coach but he didn't have a winning record vs. auburn at L.S.U. plus they treated Shula like a punching bag,he did a great job with all of those sanctions against him.(kinda makes you wonder about the timing of his firing)

The fact of the matter is....Bama needed a Coach. I guess he will do ok, but how long will he stay is the real question.
Miami, 2 years ....LSU, 3 years....Michigan State, 3 years... this is just an example of his track record. Yes he can get wins, which Bama needs desperately, but Bama is crying and praying for another Bear Bryant...I just don't think they will ever have anyone else to step up to that standard of the Tradition of the Tide. If you watch any Alabama newscast since yesterday, I don't think the second coming of Christ could compare with how these people are acting. As far as the money, to each his own, but just imagine if we could put that much money into public school systems, or scholarship money for people who really want to further their education.
As for me, Spurrier is my Man....Go South Carolina Gamecocks !! And Lou Holtz Rules !!!

I think Bama needs anything that they can to save that football team. I wish we could get somebody like Saban and get rid of Fulmer (I'm talking about the UT Vols).

You mean the coach who lied about leaving and then told the Alumni at Alabama to trust him?
Kinda makes me think of Cobra Commander telling Cobra to trust him after he betrayed Baroness (old GI Joe Reference).
Yes, I think they did a stupid thing.
