This would incourage people to drive fuel efficient vechicles and help our environment. The extra money should go towards protecting our environment. This way maybe our kids, kids can live to a ripe old age. All of this extra money should go to help the environment. What do you think?

They should pay an extra surcharge
per litre or gallon. There is no need for most people to drive these big monsters. They must pay extra for this luxury.

Why is society so wasteful?
Do you people even care what happens to this earth. Try car pooling or something.

By the sounds of answers so far most people care more about themselves than the earth. I asked about gas guzzlers not fires. Try to answer the question directly please.

It would appear that many Americans have short memories... They'll cry when gasoline prices hit $3 per gallon, but then when prices go back down a bit, they'll run right out and buy that Hummer H2 they've always wanted, or the big ski boat with the 500 HP motor. I'm probably one of those too, with six vehicles sitting in the garage and driveway, and only two licensed drivers in the house. Of course if President Obama has his way, gasoline will soon be over $5 per gallon, and everybody will be driving little electric Smart cars built by Government Motors Corp.

Ever heard of Carbon Trading and Carbon Offsetting?

You can pay to have trees planted, calculated to absorb the emissions of your vehicle based on what you drive and annual mileage.

It's not expensive, you can do it right now, and it negates the problem of high emissions from "gas guzzlers" as you so kneejerkingly call them.

And it'd be more useful to fund research into biofuels such as SVO and ethanol. Who gives a damn about trying to use a slightly lower amount of a polluting fuel, when you could just use a fuel with neutral environmental impact instead?

People who use more pay more already. What aspect of the environment are you looking to protect? Pollution?

Pollution is not related to fuel consumption, it's related to INEFFICIENT fuel consumption. One such inefficient source of fuel consumption is wood-burning fires; like the ones at campsites where people are singing "koombayah" and worshipping the environment. That camp fire meanwhile is doing 10000 times more damage to the air than a modern car. If you don't believe me, stand downwind of one, and compare the air to the air from an exhaust pipe.

So, maybe you should ban campfires, or make people pay 10000 times more for firewood than Duraflame logs.

That isnt fair. I look at it this way. If I bought a big vehicle that dosent get the best gas mileage, and I have a durango, then I better be able to feed it, and I do. I pay my fair share when I fill up every 4-5 days. There are all size vehicles out there, some people like big, then medium and some like small.

If that's a fair statement then people who drive small cars should have to pay more for the products they buy when they are hauled to market in fuel guzzling gas or diesel trucks and trains. After all, fair is fair.

Pay now or pay later but we all have to pay.

You think the government would give that money to protect the environment. Please keep that suggestion under your hat or we all pay more for gas. And no I do not own gas guzzle. Honda civic

there are gas guzzler taxes in place already when you buy vehicles, also manufacturers pay more for making them available.

I think you should let go of that tree you are hugging so tightly...i think you are choking it. :-)
