Service Packs seem quite hefty, and antivirus programs sometimes require big updates.

ummmm not unless you keep your dial up on 24/7 and have a download manager to manually download big files so they do not get interrupted and being continuously restarted
just spend another $10 and get DSL i right now pay $19.99 a month and got a free modem (minus a $40 gift card) and before the plan i have now i had i think either $12.95 or $14.95 not sure

Most antiviruses now only download new definitions rather than the whole database. When I had dialup and used avast it updated really quickly.
Windows update is a different matter, some months the downloads are quite small but sometimes they can be quite large. With servicepacks though you can usually find a magazine with it on the coverdisc after they are released.
I would overall suggest getting broadband though, once you do you won't want to return to dialup. Hopefully you are not asking this as you are one of the people who can't get broadband

Yep! Anti-virus software can be purchased from a shop and installed without being connected to the internet, and scanner updates are relatively small. Windows Update can be run with dial-up. While some updates for windows are huge, don't forget that as you have dial-up you are less vulnerable to viruses as you are not connected to the internet for that long. 'Always-on' connections are much more likely to be targetted by viruses and hackers.
And Windows Service Packs are sometimes put on discs attached to the front of computer magazines to save downloading them. I obtained SP2 that way!

It can be done - but you could go for the free broadband offer instead from the company that advertises on the telly! I'm going to as high as 8 Mbs this month - on 2.2 mbs now. 40 Gb download a month (2 Gb on BT) and free phone calls for less than 20 quid a month... They have a special offer on or something now too.
