I've heard that it is Spanish with English subtitles, but is that the same for the American release?
Is it actually an American movie done in Spanish?
Also, does reading the subtitles detract from the movie?

It is a Mexican film that is Spanish with English subtitles. Reading doesn't detract from the film at all unless you're dyslexic or quite young. It actually enhances the film to retain it in the language it was shot in so we can hear the characters' emotions being properly depicted as dubbing a film can ruin its essence.

Whether or not subtitles detract from the movie is a personal thing. For me, my dad doesn't hear well so I was raised with subtitles on the screen all the time. I feel weird at the movies where there is nothing to read. Some people can't watch movies and read at the same time without giving to much attention to one or the other. If you can't, just wait for the DVD I'm sure they'll have a dubbed track.

I heard it's in Spanish with subtitles. As long as you can read at a normal pace, subtitles are actually better because you get to hear the actor's voices as originally recorded. One of my favorite movies is "Life is Beautiful" and the dubbed version is unbearable compared to the subtitled version. Besides, the visuals in Pan's Labyrinth should keep you entertained even if the subtitles drive you crazy.

It is Spanish with English subtitles, but don't let this put you off - you don't even notice after a while! You must go and see this film...!!
I loved watching it.
