The capital , the first capital of the empire, was KARAKORUM.
It was a city built of wood in Mongolia soon after Ghengis Khan's conquest of northern China(the Kin dynasty). It was surrounded by a ditch and a wooden pallisade about 6 feet high. There was no need for complicated defences as the Mongol Empire of the time was emmensly powerful and no enemy could even approach the city. It was here that the KURALTAI(the election of the KHAGAN-great khan was held, whereby all descendants of Ghengis Khan could vote but only the sons or decsendants of the four sons of his wife-BORTE- (JUJI: JAGHATAI: OGHATAI: TULI) could run for. It was here that all ambassors, envoys and supplicants went to see the great khan. When the Yuan dynasty)the mongol rulers of China) fell KARAKORUM was sacked by the emmergent Ming Empire in 1269 A.D. The sight is now within the Russian republic.
However the Mongol Empire began to split up in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. One part - the IL KHANS of Persia had their capital at TABRIZ near the caspian sea. Another part- THE KHANS OF THE GOLDEN HORDE had their capital at BAKU near the northern end of the caspian sea. THE GREAT KHANS OF CHINA (the yuan dynasty) had their capital at PEIKING(PEIPING) which under the name of BEIJING is the capital of China today. THE KHANS OF THE WHITE HORDE were mostly nomadic.
A sucsessor empire arose at the end of the 14th century under TIMERLAINE and he eventually established his capital at SAMMUKHAND. His sucsessors, THE MOGHUL EMPERORS established their capital at DELHI in India. They stood until the comming of the British. After the fall of the yuan dynasty, KARAKORUM disappeared from history. Hope this helps.
